If you plant the mullein, bring a hardy perennial into the garden, which also requires little maintenance, but blooms beautifully.

The extremely robust mullein (verbascum), which grows up to 2 meters high, has been a particularly effective medicinal herb against cough for centuries. Which is why it can still be found in many gardens, especially in rural areas. Because from the yellow, dried flowers, sometimes also from the leaves, it is very easy to prepare a tea for coughing. The dried flowers are also suitable for mixing in different types of tea.
New varieties in different colors
Mullein are also very popular with insects. They serve them as a food plant. In the meantime, new varieties of mullein are also available in specialist shops, such as the Purple Mulleinwhich has bright purple flowers. Plant mullein
Shrub
The hardy mullein are naturally two-year-old plants that only bloom in the second year of life. The buds - along the thick stems - spring up from the bottom and produce many bright yellow flowers (natural variety). For this reason, mullein are often offered as perennial plants in nurseries and can be used immediately in the garden bed (even in spring). They prefer a dry, sunny location.
" Tip
After flowering, you should remove the mullein from the flower bed, unless it is a breed (perennial plant).
Seed culture
You can also plant the mullein in your garden with the help of seeds. Here, you should pay attention to a particularly dry, nutrient-poor, water-permeable floor with as much sun exposure as possible. Just sprinkle the seeds in the fall, pour a little soil over them and water the whole thing minimally. As a result, a large leaf rosette with velvety leaves develops in the first year.
" Tip
After flowering, mullein develop their own seeds (fall seeds), which you can easily reuse for the coming gardening year.
Grooming Mullein
The mullein flowering period begins in June and usually ends in August - sometimes even until the beginning of September. During this time, the mullein needs almost no maintenance. You should also largely refrain from giving fertilizer - only in the second year can you give a little full fertilizer in spring.
Mullein also love the dryness and only need to be watered moderately during long-lasting heat temperatures.
